Women’s Health Q&A

What is women’s health care?

Women’s health care includes all of the services you need throughout your life to maintain your sexual and reproductive health. It also addresses issues related to some of your hormones, specifically estrogen and progesterone.

Your women’s health needs change according to your age. At Montclair Concierge Medicine, Dr. DiStefano provides services related to:

  • Puberty
  • Sexual health
  • Reproductive health
  • Breast health
  • Menopause and perimenopause

Your hormones and reproductive organs develop and adjust as you get older, which is driven by the biological imperative to reproduce — even if you don’t have children or don’t want children.

Dr. DiStefano deeply understands how your body grows and changes and can meet your needs with women’s health services, including preventive care.

What are some of the most common issues impacting women’s health?

Women face many issues unique to their bodies because of their reproductive organs, including their vagina, cervix, uterus, and ovaries. Some of the most common conditions and concerns affecting women’s health are:

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Painful periods
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Reproductive cancers
  • Sexually transmitted diseases

In addition to these problems, Dr. DiStefano pays close attention to your development and life transitions such as puberty and menopause. She also provides care for conditions that can affect both men and women but are more common in women, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and osteoporosis.

What should I expect during a women’s health exam?

Women’s health exams happen annually and are part of your concierge care program at Montclair Concierge Medicine.

During each appointment, Dr. DiStefano reviews any questions or concerns you may have had since your last visit. She pays close attention to any changes you report, which helps determine which tests to perform during your physical exam.

During your physical exam, Dr. DiStefano visually examines your vulva and vagina. She also uses her hands to feel for any abnormalities in your pelvic region and breasts. She can teach you to perform breast self-examinations at home.

Some of your women’s health exams include Pap smears, during which Dr. DiStefano swabs your cervix to check for abnormal cells that could indicate you have cancer. She might recommend further testing with procedures like colposcopy, which can confirm if cancerous cells are present on your cervix.
